The hippies were right all along: Fighting for peace is like screwing for virginity

Had 2 coffees with 4 spoons of sugar and good conversation around 22.00 and now I can’t sleep. So I am going through world’s newspapers reading the headlines and keeping a napkin close by, not for the tears… mostly in case I feel like vomiting.

The scent of hypocrisy is overwhelming. This phrase alone can very much explain my point of view, yet I would like to add a few things.

“Last night, the U.N. Security Council declared a no-fly zone over Libya, along with an arms embargo. What does this mean? In its declaration, the Security Council calls for “all necessary measures” to end Moammar Gadhafi’s brutal response to Libya’s rebelling citizens by grounding all Libyan aircraft. It is, in essence, a declaration of war by the international community against Gadhafi. “ CNN

The enthusiastic core bunch is yet again formed by US, UK, FR.  Germany and Russia abstained. All the statements I’ve read seem to come out of nothing more than sheer benevolence towards the Libyans, helping them fight for democracy. The dust in the eye is again brutality, human rights, dictatorship, global calls for action, unity in defending the poor and helpless. Why does this global righteous feeling only comes up when dealing with oily fat countries? Nobody took action when women were used as instruments of war in Congo, or when in North Korea people were starved to death deliberately if they were caught bad mouthing the regime. Millions of people died then. No one heard them or lifted a paper plane to go save them. That brutality was then overlooked.

As I have seen, the fight is seemingly constrained now to the northern border  where Gadhafi’s troops are concentrated. But what happens if Gadhafi pulls back his forces? Then bye bye no-fly zone and we have a full blown war on the Libyan territory as we have seen it happening in Iraq. I have watched UK prime minister and US and FR presidents talk and all they referred to was the plan for bombarding the northern part. What happens after? What is plan B, C, D, Z? I am sure these presidents read more than 1 book in their life time or they got some summaries on negotiation skills, damage control, risk assessment and so on. Obama even won a Nobel Prize for peace!

Here is a quote from the official statement:

“The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided that the Nobel Peace Prize for 2009 is to be awarded to President Barack Obama for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples. The Committee has attached special importance to Obama’s vision of and work for a world without nuclear weapons.”

Seriously?! Seriously?!

How about we give the next Nobel Prize for peace to Berlusconi for using 100% recyclable toilet paper on his yacht when travelling to Arabic countries?

Of all the empires crumbling under their own weight, of all the wars that have been fought senselessly, we learned nothing. Our actions are to devour, exploit, to refuse evolution beyond the mere instincts of collecting resources and thus surviving. I feel humiliated every time I hear that there is a war going on in this world because I know there is always a better way of dealing with conflict and there are other things to do besides watching over our food plate.

I am going to work in 3h so I should get at least 1h of sleep. Probably the war in Libya will be resolved in the same manner we are used to and another modern colony will be formed.

But I am getting more and more insulted when I see books being published with titles like “The art of Peace”, speeches given in the name of global cooperation or the next time I am asked to wear some blue/pink/red/brown/yellow ribbon in the name of …something.
